HIPAA Privacy Rule: Privacy and the Clinician's Office

The Privacy Rule provides the first comprehensive federal protection for the privacy of health information. Most parties agree that privacy protection must not interfere with a patient’s access to or the quality of health care delivery. The flexibility of Privacy Rule will allow for more effective means for protecting and safeguarding personal health information, but providers are left to create their own privacy procedures tailored to fit their size.

Practices are required to implement several documents:

  • Authorization Forms for release of information in instances other than treatment, payment, or healthcare operations

  • Notice of Privacy Practices

  • Policy Manual/Employee Manual

  • Business Associate Agreements
